Stealing less than $1,000 is a class 1 misdemeanor (misdemeanor larceny) in your state (NC). If tried as an adult, the employee could face up to 45 days in prison. If the charge is handled as a minor, it is difficult to say what the employee would get, because the juvenille justice system as a great deal of flexibiltiy. Most likely, there would be no fail time but some combination of reimbursment, probation, and/or mandated counseling.
