Will a verbal agreement hold up in court?
Question Details: I recently hired a contractor to do work on my house. We had a verbal agreement that I would pay him as I received income. I have paid him 1/4 of the money I owe him and he is threatening to put a lien on my house.

Under the laws of all states in this country a licensed contractor is required to have written contract signed by the client and the contractor. From what you have written, the contractor seemingly will have a problem suing you under your state's business and professions code due to the absence of a written contract signed by you for the work of improvement you have written about.
