Is what is written on the memo line of a check legally binding?

I received a check which stated “paid in full” but it was not the full amount owed to me. If I cash it, am I precluded from bringing further claims for the remainder due to me?

The "memo" line ona check provided you regarding an obligation owed stating "paid in full" is not legally binding if you cash it. However, to safeguard against any claims that the person who issued the check to you will claim that no more money is owed to you, you should cross out the reference "paid in full" and write on the back of the check below your name the amount remaining owed to you.

Also make photocopies of the front and back of the check for future reference and need.
