I'm single and pregnant. Can I keep the father away from the baby when its born?
Question Details: I am 10 weeks pregnant and the father isn't helping at all. He is a alcoholic and abusive when he is drunk. He hasn't provided for me at all so far, and is refusing to talk to me. Before we split up he got drunk and knocked me down with a door. Is there anyway I can keep him away from my baby? I am dating someone. Is there a way from him to adopt the baby after its born without the father causing problems?
If you were not married at the time of conception, he is not presumed to be the father. He would have to file a paternity action in order to obtain any parental rights. You would have to file a paternity action in order to get child support from him. In an adoption case, the judge will consider the amount of time and support he has provided to you and the child in determining whether he has to consent or not. If I can be of any assistance, please give me a call.
