I would like to apply for a green card for my husband and am worried about losing my own green card.

It really depends on how long you have been outside the US without having a valid travel document.  As a permanent resident you cannot spend more than 6 months outside the US without it affecting your status.  If you are outside the US for more than a year, you can lose your green card status due to abandonment.
