Physical custody refers to the parent with whom the child primarily resides even though joint custody has been granted. This means that the child lives with the primary parent but all decisions concerning the child (i.e. medical, educational, etc.) are jointly made. Sole custody is when the child resides solely with the named or "custodial" parent which gives that parent the legal right to make all decisions regarding. The other parent or non-custodial parent may simply have visitation rights with the child.
