What are our legal options regarding a pay deduction?

Question Details: Without permission, my husband's employer took out the retail cost of car audio equipment that was installed in a customer's vehicle who tried to pay with a check. When told they couldn't pay with the check, the customer voluntarily handed over their driver's license and said they were going to the bank to get money but they never returned. A police report has been filed and the license turned over to the police. Upon recieving my husband's paycheck today, the amount has been deducted from his pay.
