Does texting screenshots violate privacy laws?
Question Details: My sister has a stalker who used to be a friend of mine. He has been sending her pretty bad messages via text and Instagram that she has shared with me via screenshots. Is it illegal for me to share those screenshots with the stalker's brother? Does that violate any privacy laws? Again, messages are very mean, condescending and threatening.
No, it is not illegal. Once you send a written or textual message or a photograph (or video, etc.) to another person, you give up control over it: they may in turn share it with whomever you want. If you don't want it shared, don't send it; so in this case, once it was sent to your sister, she can share it with you, and you may in turn share it with others.
The fact is that once a text message (written, photgraphic, etc.) is sent to another person, the sender is giving up contol over it. The recipient (absent an enforceable agreemnt tot he contrary) is then free to send it on and otherwise share it with whomever they choose.
