What can I do about possible racial discrimination in the workplace?
Question Details: I am having a situation at my current place of employment and need legal advice. There are a group of Hispanic managers showing favoritism and slight racial discrimination towards myself and another Caucasian worker. I am unable to go to my owner due to fear of more bullying and I am unsure what I should do about this.
An employer has an obligation to look into reports of racial (or national origin) discrimination when they are made and, if the reports are credible, take reasonable steps to stop it. If you have, as you indicate, reported this matter to upper managment and they have refused or failed to do anything, then the employer is engagng in illegal discrimination and you could contact the federal EEOC to file a complaint.
At this point, since management is apparently doing nothing about your concerns, you can contact the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) to file a complaint. Here is a link to their website: https://www.eeoc.gov/. Additionally, EEO laws prohibit punishing employees for filing such complaints (however, employers are free to discipline workers for non-retaliatory/non-discriminatory reasons).
