Is my marriage in need of legal divorce

I reside in Alabama. In 2016 I went to
west Africa and had a court marriage to
my husband who was not a citizen of
Ghana but a citizen of Nigeria. We were
wed in a court in Accra. He says because
he was not a citizen of Ghana and
neither was I that we do not require a
legal divorce. Do I require a legal
divorce being as how neither of us were
citizens of the country and basically he
paid the courts off to preform the
marriage

IF the marriage was legally conducted in Ghana--that is, Ghana will conduct and honor a marriage between non-citizens--then you have to divorce. ANY marriage which was valid where and when it was made must be ended by divorce if you want to be no longer married or to marry someone else. As for whether the marriage was valid in Ghana, you'll have to ask a Ghanese attorney or legal site--we only provide information about U.S. law.
