Is my foreign marriage in need of a legal divorce?

Question Details: I now reside in AL. About 2 years ago, I went to west Africa and had a court marriage to my husband who was not a citizen of Ghana but a citizen of Nigeria. We were wed in a court in Accra. He says that since he was not a citizen of Ghana and neither was I that we do not require a legal divorce. Do I require a legal divorce being as how neither of us were citizens of the country and basically he paid the courts off to preform the marriage?
