If I were to get my driver’s license and didn’t plan on driving until I buy a car, do I still have to have auto insurance?

Auto insurance is for just that, the insuring of the vehicle. Since there is no such vehicle at this point, insurance is not needed. Merely obtaining the right to drive (i.e. having a license) does not impart the obigation to insure.

No, you would not need insurance: cars are insured, not drivers. Not having insurance, which often provides protection when even driving another's car or a rental car, you would be more vulnerable if you drove a friend's car, a rental, etc., but you are not required to get insurance until you have a car to insure.
