Can I use the word "certified" in my marketing and materials?
Question Details: I have a car/auto detailing business and wish to use the word "'certified" in my marketing and materials. So I may print in ads, "Your car will be certified automagic clean using our 12 point checklist" or "Your car is automagic certified clean". Is the word certified a word I am legally allowed to use without a course behind it?
As long as the ad or marketing is not deceptive, you may use it. So as long as you do not imply any certification or guaranty beyond what you are in fact providing, you could do this. The key is to not deceive customers or potential customers. "Certified" has no inherent legal meaning: it gets it's meaning from context--who is certifying as to what.
