Can I change my H1b status in to J1 while staying here in the U.S.?
Question Details: I am on my 6th year of H1b. Due to some problems I couldn't apply for I-140 and now I am running short of time. Is it possible to find a J1 sponsor and apply for change of status and stay here? Is it necessary to exit the country?
Yes, you can try to change status to J-1 although it is not very likely that will succeed if you have already had an employer submit PERM on your behalf. Do you have any time you can recapture in H-1B time? When was PERM originally filed because you might be eligible for 7th year extension if PERM was filed before the end of your 5th year.
