Is it legal to carry a practice sword to and from taekwondo class?
I know that in TXit is illegal to carry a knife with a blade longer than 5 inches. I teach a traditional TaeKwon-Do class and in the class Iteach the use of traditional weapons including the Katana, in class and at demonstrations inside the school. I use an training katana made out of aluminum. The blade is completely dull and cannot be sharpened; if an attempt to sharpen the blade is made the blade can ward and break. Is it legal for me to carry this to and from my class and home and to any demonstrations in a public venue?
Sections of the Texas Code has been amended over the years to explain the legal method of carrying such a weapon. Under Section 46.03 you cannot bring such a knife to a school unless pursuant to written regulations or written authorization.
Essentially, if you are traveling, and it is not in plain view (so let's say in the trunk), and you are not a convicted felon, you are not traveling on a bus (public vehicle), and you have not been convicted of a Class B misdemeanor or worse.
