Can I be laid off for no reason without notice?
I was just laid off from my work. My boss just showed up and told me that they don't want me there anymore. I did not sign anything.
Did you have an employment contract that required you be informed as to the reason for discharge or that prior notice be given? Was there a union agreement that might also provide for this? Did your discharge under the circumstances violate existing company policy? Was your treatment due to some form of actionable discrimination? If not, than as an "at will" employee you can be fired for any reason or no reason at all, with or without notice. The fact is that an employer can generally set the terms and conditions of the workplace as it sees fit.
