How long in jail for non-payment of child support ?
I think that I'm about $3,500 behind. I'm ordered to pay $255 a month and i have not paid one time i have not had a job in almost 2 years. Because I'm a convicted felon and its hard to get a job. Are there other ways to work the money I owe like community hours?
Right now, I doubt you would be in jail for longer than it took to get you in front of a judge for an ability-to-pay hearing. Judges understand that you can't get blood from a stone.
Being in jail for non-payment of child support is different from being in jail after being convicted of a crime and sentenced to do time. That's punishment for what has already been done. Jail for non-payment of child support is coercive, to make you do something: many judges will tell "deadbeat dads," that "the key to the cell is in your checkbook. Let me know when you're ready to write it, and we'll let you go." If you have no money and no income, what's the point?
