Question Details: Does my health insurance cover me if I receive treatments in another state? Are Insurance providers governd by the laws in my home ST or the state I go to for treatment? I have cobra from a former employer in Florida, but it does not cover IVF treatments. NJ the insurance does cover IVF. Can I go to NJ and receive IVF treatments and will it be covered by my cobra cigna medical insurance? Do I need to move to NJ & establish residency? How long does residency take to establish in NJ?
Oh boy. Not all insurance is created the same. Your COBRA simply continues for a short amount of time what you already have. This means that if under your old insurance you weren't covered out of state, then you won't be covered out of state. What you may wish to ask is your insurance company is if they cover it in this other state and if you can simply go there -- i.e., get a pre-qualification/pre-approval before you cross borders -- I don't think establishing residency is your answer.
If your insurance company will not help you, file a complaint/inquiry with each state's Dept of Insurance.
