Can I transfer my probation to another state?
I'm on probation for charges of armed robbery. I have no other record. I am basically a decent law abiding citizen that made one really bad choice. I'm 52. I lost both my children, one as recent as 6 months ago. Can I move to another state to be with a family member and transfer my probation?
I am sorry for your losses. Each state has rules that allow for the transfer of probation from state to state depending on the circumstances and the crime. It really depends on how nice your probation officer is as he or she can either help or hinder your situation.
Ask your probation officer for a copy of the criteria to move out of state. It should be in writing. Once you have it look it over and start to meet all the criteria step by step: place to live, job, etc., but do not leave the state yet. Once you can meet the criteria ask your probation officer to help you with the transfer. It can take about 6 months once you move to have the matter officially transferred to a new state. Once you are assigned make sure that you keep you appointment and show the new PO that you are remorseful for your past actions and that you want to start over. Good luck.
