Can apartment management charge me for replacing stove drip pans in my apartment unit?Is it legal?
Question Details: I've been living in an apartment unit for almost 2 years now & I've requested several work orders in the past such as replacement of lights, shower fixtures, and even stove drip pans at no cost all. However, I was surprised last week when the management sent me a balance due notice letting me know that I owed them $12 for the pans. It's ridiculous because I worked as an apartment maintenance before & we replaced items such as stove drip pans free of charge to the renters. Please help me with this one. Thank you very much!
Without seeing what the pans looked like, that you asked to have replaced, it's very hard for me to weigh in on this one, either way.
Tenants are entitled to repairs of ordinary wear and tear, without being charged for that. However, it is up to the landlord to decide, within reason, what does or does not need replacing at any particular time. I suspect that what happened here was that after the replacement was done, management looked at your old drip pans and decided you were pushing their envelope too far.
